Course Information

Introduction

Cities are home to more than half of the world's population and are major centers of economic activities.
In 2019, about 55.72% of the world's population lived in cities.
This percentage is expected to reach 68% by the year 2050.
In the Arab region in 2019, the ratio of urban population to the total population was 59.2%, which is higher than the global average.
Rapid urbanization makes cities more vulnerable to a series of challenges related to growth, competitiveness, performance, and livelihoods, including potential pressures on services and infrastructure.
Moreover, unplanned urban development may cause a series of challenges and severe pressures on urban systems, generating long-term pressures on essential components and services.
Agility has emerged as a new model to respond to the shocks and pressures caused by rapid socio-economic, environmental, technological, and demographic changes that can affect multiple urban systems, including transport systems, food networks, healthcare services, air quality, energy networks and government services, so cities need a flexible and sustainable business model capable of providing the solutions that city dwellers need.
These solutions should be economically feasible, socially inclusive, environmentally flexible, and sustainable.
In other words,
These solutions should be financially self-sufficient and able to save existing resources for future generations and should ensure that all society benefits and services are fair and without discrimination.
